Taking time out to enjoy the little things

With life being so fast paced all the time I think it is so important to take a moment to slow it down and just enjoy yourself, whether that is for 10 minutes or an hour, it is something that needs to be done for your sanity. With the madness of college beginning again and the mountains of labs that I have to attend I realised that I was losing some of that ‘me time’ that I had so generously enjoyed throughout the winter break. So I decided to take some initiative and go for a meal with one of my friends so that we could both just enjoy some food stress free.

On this particular day we had the black cloud that is a three-hour lab looming over our heads so we purposefully decided to walk into the city and go to one of our favourite spots which is of course Captain America’s. The food here is always so amazing and delicious that there was no other option for me but to get one of their infamous burgers. The burger of my choice was a BBQ chicken burger and to say it was enjoyable would be a serious underrating. It definitely was one of the best burgers I have ever had the joy of eating and was just what I needed after a busy week. There is something about stress and anxiety that always astounds me, it’s the fact that it creeps up on you unknowingly ever so slightly and until it becomes an impossible weight to bear. It can be so cripplingly that for me it was a necessity to take that hour to just enjoy myself and of course that glorious food.

On the walk back to finish the rest of the busy day our eyes clasped on a new donut bakery that had just opened up and it was like fate had dictated what our next move was going to be. There was no way that I was walking past a donut bakery without getting one so that is exactly what we did. We popped in and I picked up a Terry’s Chocolate Orange donut which is exactly what I needed after such a savoury meal. If you know anything about me, you know that I have the sweet tooth of a little child and this donut was so loved and adored while it was in my presence. By far that was the perfect way to end my taking a time out session and it took my stress and quite literally halved it.

More often than not we as a society are so plagued with waiting for this or that thing to come around or happen that we are not looking at the now and present. We can just consume ourselves with looking past our own lives and looking into others that we can so easily forget our need and even ourselves. Taking small moments like this for me anyways remind me to take care of myself not only physically but mentally and that at the end of the day is the most important thing. I urge you all to just relish in these small moments, whether it is getting your nails done or going to the cinema, just do something because that is what you want to do and I promise you that after that the world will seem just a little bit brighter.

What is the favourite ‘little thing’ to do for yourself, comment down below because I would love to know!
